Whitehouse Scores 4 in Comeback Win

Market Harborough 1s travelled to Melton Mowbray on Saturday and returned to winning ways after a painful 4-5 defeat at home to Nottingham last week.

The first half started with both teams trying to maintain ball possession and testing each other out. Harborough then struck with a fierce Tom Whitehouse strike which the keeper couldn’t keep out. Some sloppy play resulted in Melton equalising before Whitehouse restored Harborough’s lead with a well drilled penalty corner.

The first five minutes of the second half saw a shambolic defensive display from Harborough as they conceded 3 goals and quickly found themselves 4-2 behind. Harborough managed to get on the ball again and Whitehouse pulled a goal back and secured his hat trick with a well worked team attack. Harborough continued to press and with time running out Bob Read popped up at the back post to bundle in the equaliser. Melton’s heads were dropping and Harborough knew there was an opportunity for an unlikely and spectacular comeback win. With two minutes remaining it was Tom Whitehouse, in his first start this year, who scored the winner and his 4th of the match.

Harborough saw the remaining seconds out with ease and can take confidence into the remaining fixtures before the Christmas break.

Sunday:

Women’s 1 lost 0-1 at home to Loughborough Students’ 5

It was cold, and many players had played at least one game this weekend, so absolutely hats off to the effort.

Defence was solid as ever, kept out 1285 short corners. Loughborough came and came on droves of attack and every time, Harborough defending, resolutely. Solidly. There were too many defensive interceptions to count, it was almost like the Battle of Britain. Without the facism.

Moving forward there was clever passing and triangles. Smooth movements. During the battle of Middle Earth, there came a snatch of a pass and play, that scuffed off the Loughborough’s foward’s stick that thwarted us.

All in all, resolute by Harbs, they dug in more than Man Utd players do. Player of the match was Ellie John, who returned and smashed through the pitch. Everyone put in a shift today and if Carlsberg made hockey teams, sure it wouldn’t be u,s but we’d be close!

1-0 loss but onwards and upwards! Well done to all playing two games this weekend. Keep our heads up! And such hard work deserves a total round of applause by all.

The U12s & U14s enjoyed their Junior Tournament hosted by Northampton Saints, playing many matches on Sunday morning.
